Pre-agility Foundation Training Class
Instructor Flavia Potenza
If you'd like to enroll in an upcoming class please email agilitytrainer@aol.com or call 805-524-7900.
*advance registration recommended. Please call or email to confirm start date and space availability.
This six-week class is an introduction to agility for the novice and novice handlers with some experience who want to refresh or strengthen their commands and handling techniques. Focus will be on ground work to reinforce basic obedience commands used in agility and how they apply to handling strategies. The last session will be an introduction to the equipment. Among the commands that students will learn are instant recall, instant sit and down, stay, circle, come to the hand and much more. Students who successfully perform the required behaviors will earn a certificate of completion and the confidence to begin work on agility equipment. The class is structured to build confidence in both dog and handler and to teach and reinforce behaviors for success in agility whether for fun or competition. All instruction is based on positive reinforcement and making it fun for everyone, especially the dogs.
Flavia Potenza Bio
Flavia Potenza first began agility training with Contact Point Agility (CPA) in 1998 with her shepherd mix, Homer, who earned his USDAA AD title in 2000 and then retired. In addition to CPA, she has also trained with Kristy Netzer’s Happy Dog Agility and with Janine Pierce’s J9’s K9s for obedience. Flavia grew up with dogs, cats, horses and nature and was rarely without at least one of these animals in her life and usually several. When she moved to California, she and her horse, Echo, competed in three-day-eventing shows, a period of time that introduced her to and honed her training skills for competition. Echo passed on and Flavia focused on training her dogs. When Homer arrived, Contact Point was the perfect opportunity to bond with her puppy, apply what she already knew and to learn more; so much more that over the years, friends frequently asked her advice regarding behavior and obedience, and soon requests came in to handle their dogs for them in agility classes and shows.
